Torah Tutor: Lesson Outline
Many methods have been devised over the centuries for teaching cantillation (chanting) of Hebrew biblical texts. The lessons and exercises in TropeTrainer are based on methods proven successful for thousands of students.If you have a reasonably good ear for music, and can sing what you hear, you can learn to chant by yourself. However, many students will want to learn with the aid of an instructor, perhaps a Cantor, a Rabbi, or a tutor.It is recommended that every student's work be periodically reviewed by someone who knows how to chant these texts. This feedback can be very important for judging the progress you are making, and more importantly, for avoiding mistakes that you might not hear yourself making.The approaches in TropeTrainer reflect the fact that in their functions as punctuation marks, Trope appear in ”groups” or ”phrases” which reflect the natural phrasing of the Hebrew texts. These phrases are also commonly referred to as “clauses” as well.A wide variety of lessons and exercises are provided, so that your learning preferences and the various teaching styles of instructors can be accommodated.For instance, one particular method of learning to chant a specific Biblical text is called the ”Four-Step Method”, used by many clergy and educators. Once you know the names and musical motifs for most of the Tropes in their ”groups” or ”phrases” follow these steps.Step 1: Read the Hebrew text of the Biblical passage
Step 2: Read the names of the Tropes as they appear in that Biblical text
Step 3: Chant the names of the Tropes as they appear in that Biblical text
Step 3: Chant the actual Biblical text, replacing the Hebrew words for the Trope names
This ”Four-Step Method” is based on the concept that reading and chanting are learned in neighboring areas of the human brain. By separating these tasks, the brain can better retain and integrate them.Some may choose to practice by recording their own voice chanting the trope word, phrase, or verse then playing it back to hear themselves and check pronunciation. To record your voice directly on the site, click on the “Record” feature located in the upper toolbar. Once in the “Record” tool, click “Start Recording” and then sing the word, phrase, or verse. When you have finished recording click “Stop Recording.” To play back your voice, click the black triangle (▶) button within the recording oval.
