Learn to chant the Haftarah

The Haftarah course teaches the Haftarah trope melody phrase by phrase, starting from the basics of trope and chanting. Its last lessons reach the Haftarot chanted in the Eichah melody and the blessings before and after the reading, for Shabbat, the festivals and fast days.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Haftarah melody different from Torah?

The Haftarah uses the same trope marks as the Torah, sung to a melody of its own. In most Haftarah melodies the last phrase turns from minor to major, leading into the blessings after the reading.

When is the Haftarah chanted in the Eichah melody?

Many communities chant most of the Haftarah for Shabbat Chazon, the Shabbat before Tisha B'Av, in the Eichah melody, and most of the Haftarah for Tisha B'Av morning too. The course teaches that melody in a lesson of its own.

Does the Haftarah course teach the blessings?

Yes. It teaches the blessing before the Haftarah and the blessings after it for Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, Pesach, Shavuot and fast days. Each holiday's blessings after the reading also come in the version for when it falls on Shabbat.

Can I try the Haftarah lessons for free?

Yes. The first four Haftarah lessons are free for everyone: the introduction, lesson tips, the lesson outline and trope symbols. The blessings are free to read too. Their audio, and the lessons from Etnachta phrases to the Eichah melody, need a TropeTrainer subscription.
