Learn to chant Tehillim

The Tehillim course teaches Ta'amei Emet, the trope system Tehillim shares with Mishlei and Iyov, as the Syrian tradition chants it. It starts with the system's 21 trope symbols, teaches the three melodies of Silluq and each phrase melody, and ends with practice on whole chapters.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ta'amei Emet?

Ta'amei Emet is the trope system of three books, Iyov (Job), Mishlei (Proverbs) and Tehillim (Psalms), named for the first letters of the three. Its chart in this course has 21 trope symbols: 12 disjunctive and 9 conjunctive.

How is Tehillim trope different from Torah trope?

Tehillim uses Ta'amei Emet, a trope system of its own, in place of the marks of the Torah. Many of its marks look like Torah marks, but some are used in different ways, and Silluq, which ends every verse, has three melodies.

Is Tehillim chanted with trope?

Yes, in the Syrian tradition: the Jews of Syria kept a tradition of chanting Tehillim with Ta'amei Emet. This course teaches their system, using the Syrian names of the marks.

Can I try the Tehillim lessons for free?

Yes. Trope Symbols of Ta'amei Emet, the first lesson, is free for everyone and introduces the system and its 21 symbols. The lessons after it, from the three Silluq melodies to practice on whole chapters, need a TropeTrainer subscription.
